Here are some tips for you. Duck, Drop, Cover and Hold Duck under a strong piece of furniture, if possible. Most earthquake injuries are the result of being hit by something falling on you. Drop to the floor to avoid falling or being thrown down. And protect you from flying glass. Use clothes, blankets, cushions or furniture for covering. Hold on to whatever you're using, as the ground motion may be violent. Get away from glass, bookcases or anything heavy that could fall over on you. Stay away from the doors Doorways used to be recommended but most experts now say: stay away from them. Doors can suddenly shut with bone crushing force. Anyway, the experts say that in modern construction a doorway is no stronger than any other location along the wall. Try to run outside While the ground is moving, the greatest danger is of being injured by taking a fall or being hit by a falling piece of building as you exit. If you smell gas or when the shaking stops, calmly, carefully make your way out and get clear of the building. Before you leave, get shoes on because you will be walking on broken glass. If you're in a crowd, stay calm, and take what can cover you and find where you are. In a crowd the greatest dangers are panic and the rush for an exit. 41. Which of the following is TRUE about earthquakes? A. Floors cause most injuries. B. Doors should be shut at all times. C. Clothes can be used for protection. D. Following a crowd is always right. 42. Which of the following best explains"recommended"underlined in this text? A.Introduced. B. Realized. C. Suggested. D.Explained. 43. What is the purpose of the text? A. To inform people of possible dangers of an earthquake. B. To tell family members to stay calm in an earthquake. C. To order people to gain knowledge about an earthquake. D. To introduce ways to protect people in an earthquake. B Christa Marie Eastburn has added a new name to the list of people she sends Father’s Day cards to—a father she grew up never knowing. "I have a real father to send a card to this time, "she told the newspaper last week. “But I still don’t have everything that goes with it—like the memories.” Her parents, Karl Beinfohr and Ingeborg Mueller, got married in Germany in the 1940s when World War II was on and a year later Marie was born—a daughter who grew up thinking her father, a German soldier, died in the war. This year, Eastburn found and got in touch with relatives in Germany, hoping they could tell her about her father. One day, a letter arrived in her mailbox. "All these years of quietness, "Beinfohr wrote, "I don' t know what you have lived through. The news that she had a father who lived an ocean away brought tears to Eastburn's eyes. She asked them to complete the note, “I wish my teacher knew..." and share something about themselves. Their honest answers gave the teacher a chance to understand her students’ difficulties.“I wish my teacher knew I have no pencils to do my homework,” wrote one child. “I wish my teacher knew sometimes my reading homework is not signed because my mom is not free a lot,” wrote another. Some showed hope for the future. “I wish my teacher knew that I warn to go to college.” “Some notes are really heartbreaking.” Schwartz tells ABC News. “I care deeply about each of my students and I don’t want them to be poor forever.” She explains, “I hoped to know more about their lives and how I could better support them. So I decided to let them tell me what I needed to know. That was why I created the fill-in-the-blank exercise.” _______ the third graders were allowed to answer anonymously (匿名地) , most wanted to include names. And some were even excited to read their notes out loud, like one shy girl who bravely said that she was lonely. “After she told the class, ‘I don’t have friends to play with me,’ I was worried about what they would do,” Schwartz tells Us Weekly. However,I felt encouraged to see how much support the other kids offered her. They invited her to play at break and sit with them at lunch. You see, children have an unusual ability to express empathy(同情) .” “The results have been surprising,” says Schwartz. “It shows the importance of giving people a voice and really listening to them.” (以下是 A 种题型) 47. An expert said, “Parents today want their kids to spend time on things that can bring them respect. We have stopped doing the one thing that has proven to bring success. 52_____” One study found that young adults who began chores at ages 3 and 4 were more likely to succeed. Compared to no-chore kids, they had better family relations, did better in school, did better at work and were more self-confident.Personal happiness is said to come from strong relationships. If you complain about doing the dishes,so will your children. A. Watch your language. B. That is doing household chores. C. Instead of saying, “Do your chores,” say, “let’s do our chores.” D. 第I卷(选择题) 一、阅读理解 Cosmetic surgery (整容手术) is not something to be entered into lightly. Unfortunately, in this modern world, we have become confused by very narrow standards of beauty. Images of stars who never seem to age are seen everywhere these days. We forget the fact that most of these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理), driven by the extremely powerful beauty industry. We are all different — why should we all look the same? Isn’t there more to life than having surgery in order to have the same boring face that everybody else wants to have? —Dr Elisabeth McKenna, Psychologist Yes, it’s not real! That’s what I told my friends when they started asking me about my nose job. I’d always been sensitive to my nose, but it took me a long time before I decided to go for cosmetic surgery. I took advice from several doctors and after careful consideration I finally decided to have it done. I had been saving money from my part-time job and my parents helped me out with the rest. It was quite expensive but I don’t regret a penny of it. In fact I wish I’d had it done a few years ago. I’ m sure I wouldn’t have been laughed at so much at school. —Debbie Caron, Student It makes me really angry to think of the millions of people who spend much money on cosmetic surgery. Surgery should be carried out for medical purposes, not vanity (虚荣心). I would rather all the money spent on cosmetic surgery was used to treat people around the world who are in need but can’t get proper medical treatment. Furthermore, there are thousands of under-qualified doctors out there who only care about getting as rich as possible as quickly as possible. They don’t care about the psychological and physical damage they do. The whole industry makes me sick. We should do something to stop it. —Danny Glass, Student 1.What does Dr Elisabeth McKenna suggest? A.Don’t be fooled by “perfection”. B.Cosmetic surgery often goes wrong. C.The beauty industry needs improving. D.It’s unnecessary to set new standards of beauty. 2.What did Debbie Caron’s cosmetic surgery bring to her? A.More friends. B.More worries. C.More self-confidence. D.More job opportunities. 3.How does Danny Glass feel about those who have cosmetic surgery? A.They should be treated as patients. B.They hurt themselves psychologically and physically. C.They can have a new start. D.They waste money and medical resources. I was raised in a house where my sisters and I weren’t trusted by our mother to manage our own appearance. As a result, there were rules, and trends were largely ignored. A few years ago,I was home for a visit when my mom,now in her early 70s,called me into her bedroom. We were about ready to leave for dinner.“I don’t know what to wear” she complained “You girls always look so good.” I paused in the doorway and looked at her, wondering if I'd misheard.“What do you mean?”I asked her.“You know what to wear‘'No.”she answered.“I don’t.Can you pick something?”I was so surprised. This was the same woman who,in 1989,told my younger sister she wasn’t allowed to leave the house wearing a pair of ripped(有破洞的)jeans;the same woman who,in high school, called me while l was out at a party to ask if my hair was up.“You look better with it down,”she told me,before I could answer I realized, suddenly, that my mother—always so strong—not only wanted my opinion, but needed it.I pulled a pair of blue jeans from the closet and a light blue sweater from her drawer “Wear this with your black shoes,”I told her.She did My mother certainly doesn’t need anyone to take care of her.In fact, she still cares for my grandmother who lives with her.But with that one question,my mother and I started the role reversal(转变)that happens with all parents and all children, from caregiver to receiver. Now,if I’m visiting or we’re together,it's rare for her to wear anything without checking with me first. But every so often,it seems like she asks me just to be able to disagree with my answer and pick out something on her own.And when she does,I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it's“great”.And sometimes it’s“awful.’’ 4.When the author was young,she____. He held the thick handles of the case and lifted it with his thin arms, pushing it into place with a sigh. “You should relax and be the lady, and let me do the heavy tasks,” he said seriously. “In the future, someone special will come into your life and take over such tasks from me, but that will never happen if you do everything yourself.” I was stunned into silence. This was not the father I remembered from childhood, who trained me to study hard at school, asked me to earn my own pocket money as a teenager at a local coffee shop, and even taught me household chores so that my life alone in London wouldn’t turn into a mess. But then, eight years after I left home and started a new life in the UK, I realized for the first time that my dad still has expectations for me to be like a princess and to stay dependent and delicate, which were considered necessary qualities of women in traditional China. Well, that came a little late, Little did Dad know that over the three years of my university life, I moved flats five times all by myself, dragging suitcases of books and clothes, and waiting for the taxi in the rain while holding tight onto cardboard boxes. Meanwhile, living in the UK – a country currently led by a female prime minister – I have never thought there is anything girls cannot do. Most of my female friends are professionals working in the City of London, and after work, we frequently go down to the pub for a drink, just like the guys do – something my mother never did. I wondered how I might make Dad understand the new world his little girl has entered. Perhaps one day, he will realize the “someone special” in my life will appreciate my confidence and independence above dependence, and admit that times have changed. 8.What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? To travel abroad, we often meet the problem of what to take and how to take it. Take as little as possible. Choose clothes for your use in different kinds of situations and when you have made your final choice, take half of it! It’s always a big problem to take too many things, and anyway if necessary, you can buy what you need in America. Things like jeans, T-shirts and other clothes are good buys in the US. If you hunt around you can usually find something on sale. Whatever baggage you take, make sure it is easy to take. Getting on and off buses and trains, even just changing planes, can be a test if your bags are too heavy or too many. The best way is to take one holdall, like a suitcase or a backpack, and then a smaller bag. Even when you have to check in your holdall, at the airport or bus station, you can keep all your money and documents by your side. It is also a good idea to keep a change of clothing in your shoulder bag in case your suitcase or backpack gets lost by an airline or a bus company. The means you choose to travel around the US will depend on your money, you time and something else. Since there are certain discounts available to travelers who buy their tickets outside the US, it is a good idea to make travel plans before you go. Also, when you buy your tickets outside the US, you save the eight percent sales tax. Travel is like everything else in America---you have to shop around for the best busy. Never be afraid to ask for the cheapest fare. The clerk seldom offers you the cheapest one. 12.What is the writer’s idea about what to take while travelling abroad? That was in the first year of high school. She was a knowledgeable literature teacher then. However, during my first year in school, she struck terror into my heart(使我胆战心惊). And everyone else’s of course. Just the mention of her name made the most unruly classes silent. Nevertheless, the two years of junior high passed by rather quickly. Soon, I went to senior high class. I had worked hard and gotten the subject combination that I wished for. Together with a group of old friends, I soon settled down in class comfortably. To everyone’s surprise, she was fortunate enough to be my teacher that year. I was shocked when I heard the news. This time round, however, I decided not to hide in terror whenever she was near. I decided to face the fact that we were going to meet each other for the next 365 days. Instead of trying too hard to lick her boots, I tried my best to my natural self in front of her. Still, I could not shake off the ice-cold impression that she put in my heart. True, her jokes sometimes sent me into fits of laughter, yet at other times these jokes simply fell flat the moment she told them. My lovely class, however, was already ready to laugh at the right time of her amusing stories. After all, we would not want to run the risk of provoking(激怒) her. Unluckily, life was not to remain boring. One day we received news that Miss Vicki was to leave Singapore for the Philippines where she would take part in a voluntary teaching program for the poor. We did not know what to say actually. All of us cried at the airport. 4.During the first year in school, the author thought Miss Vicki was . C.Students liked Miss Vicki’s class very much. D.Students pretended to laugh to please Miss Vicki. 7.What can we infer about Miss Vicki from the last paragraph? A.She was fired by the school. B.She was not accepted by the students. C.She was unwilling to leave her students. D.She had a strong sense of social responsibility. A recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore(NUS)has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility (能见度)of yellow makes it easier for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate. The study was led by Prof Ho. To test whether there was a causal relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analysed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6.1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month. The researchers also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio(比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76.6 fewer accidents would occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year. Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, switching the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual savings of $2 million. “We are eager to continue to validate(证实) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For instance, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we are also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors,” explained Prof Ho. 8.Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents? A.Because yellow can be seen more easily. B.Because yellow signals a warning of danger. C.Because drivers tend to be more careful in yellow taxis. D.Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings. 9.What’s Prof Ho’s study based on? A.Physical risks taxi passengers experience. B.The economic effect of changing taxi color. C.Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company. D.Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide. 10.What do Prof Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest? A.School buses should be painted yellow. B.Their findings are worth popularizing. C.Yellow should be widely used in public transport. D.Their study will be furthered. 11.What can be the best title for the text? A.Caution: yellow taxis ahead B.Safer to ride in yellow taxis C.Why are yellow taxis preferred? D.How can colors help prevent accidents? 二、七选五 "You are what you eat," goes an English saying. Some people would argue that what one has gone through is important to being a motivational speaker, but an 11-year-old Pakistani kid is showing that all you really need is an inspirational speech and confidence. At just 11 years of age, Hammad Safi has accomplished what most of us won’t be able to do in a lifetime. He is the youngest motivational speaker in Pakistan, and probably the world, a free writer, TV anchor and a lecturer at a university, where he teaches students twice his age. He has been referred to as a “super kid”, a “child extraordinaire”, “motivational guru” and even “the little genius of Pakistan”. “He is not an ordinary child. I have seen abilities in him. That’s why I have appointed special teachers for him,” Safi’s father, Abdul Rehman Khan, said, “I want him to become a special leader. I’m very proud… For his abilities, for his intelligence.” Abdul’s description may seem exaggerated (夸张的)– he is Hammad’s father after all – but the boy is indeed capable beyond his years. How many 11-year-old children do you know that can command the attention of thousands of adults while speaking on serious topics like success, life challenges or responsibility? Hammad can, and he does it with ease, relying on his great charm, practiced hand gestures and a confidence that attracts his audiences greatly. “A few months ago I was really disappointed with life…I was thinking about suicide, because there are no jobs and no success in life,” a student said, “Then I saw a movie of Hammad Safi. I thought if an 11-year-old child can do anything, why can’t I?” That is what makes Safi so special, his power to get his message across and inspire people much older than him. Many in Pakistan are astonished by Hammad’s self-confidence and his ability to lecture on important subjects, but there are also those who believe that this role is depriving the boy of his childhood. 4.Which statement about Hammad Safi is not correct? A.He is much younger than his audience. B.He is the youngest motivational speaker in the world. C.People in Pakistan think highly of Hammad Safi. D.His father is also proud of him very much. 5.What can’t you learn from Hammad Safi’s speech? A.We can realize the importance of responsibility. B.We can get confidence to deal with life challenges. C.We can remember the happy memory of childhood. D.We can understand the relationship between confidence and success. 6.What does the underlined word “depriving” in the last paragraph mean? A.To guarantee that something will happen. B.To make somebody imagine. C.To take away something by force. D.To give up something all by oneself. 7.What is the main idea of the passage? A.It introduces a very famous speaker. B.It tells that people in Pakistan are living without motivation. C.It tells us how to give people confidence. D.It introduces a young motivational speaker. When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn’t sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, VOCs for short. Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .It’s a plant’s way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Apparently. Because we can watch the neighbours react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers. Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking, stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do. Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth. Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There’s a whole lot going on. 8.What does a plant do when it is under attack? A.It makes noises. B.It gets help from other plants. C.It stands quietly D.It sends out certain chemicals. 9.What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraph 3? A.The attackers get attacked. B.The insects gather under the table. C.The plants get ready to fight back. D.The perfumes attract natural enemies. 10.Scientists find from their studies that plants can ________. A.predict natural disasters B.protect themselves against insects C.talk to one another intentionally D.help their neighbors when necessary 11.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.The world is changing faster than ever. B.People have stronger senses than before C.The world is more complex than it seems D.People in Darwin’s time were imaginative. The bristlecone pine is the longest-living thing on the earth. These trees, with their strangely-shaped, wind-beaten limbs(枝干), can live up to 5,000 years. But experts worry that a warming climate in some areas may threaten its future. Researchers say warmer weather is permitting a similar kind of tree, the limber pine, to take over good growing places from the ancient bristlecone. They say the tree is being crowded out of mountainous areas where it grows. “The bristlecone pine is the oldest individually growing organism,” researchers say. They grow in high mountain forests in eastern California, Nevada and Utah. In those mountains, the trees face high winds and extreme temperatures, which leave them with twisted limbs and shapes. “Even in such tough conditions,” Brian Smithers, a researcher at the University of California, said, “the limber pine is taking all the good spots.” The limber pine is the bristlecone’s distant relative and competitor. It can also live a long time——up to 2,000 years. And it is usually found at lower altitudes, where temperatures are warmer. However, according to a three-year study which centered on trees that have started growing in the last 50 years in California’s White Mountains, most of the trees growing at higher altitudes were limber pines. Scientists compared the competing species to two o1d men in a very slow race up a mountainside. This race between such slow-growing trees takes thousands of years. They say climate change is causing the competition. Smithers said the bristlecone pines are not in danger of disappearing. But he assumes they could be crowded out of some places where they have grown for thousands of years. The researchers say the findings show how climate change can affect the two kinds of trees. The information, they say, can help scientists understand more complex forests. 12.What’s the fun_ction of Paragraph 1? A.To introduce a topic. B.To summarize the whole passage. C.To describe the appearance of a tree. D.To praise the hard work of the experts. 13.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A.There will be older trees sent out of those mountains. B.There will be more places covered with bristlecone pines. C.There will be better limber pines replacing the ancient ones. D.There will be fewer bristlecone pines growing in those areas. 14.According to the passage, the reason why limber pines can grow at higher altitudes is_________. A.the high winds B.the difficult conditions C.the changing climate D.the extreme temperatures 15.What is the researchers’ attitude towards the future of the bristlecone pine? A.Positive. B.Concerned. C.Enthusiastic. D.Indifferent. 二、七选五 While many people are physically active in high school, there are always many things for teens to compromise their healthy lifestyle.16. Get plenty of rest. D 【解析】 【分析】 本文是一篇记叙文,介绍了巴基斯坦最年轻的励志演说家Hammad Safi的演讲风格,同时也介绍了不同的人对这个成名的小小演说家有不同的看法。 4.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“He is the youngest motivational speaker in Pakistan, and probably the world”可知,Hammad Safi是巴基斯坦最年轻的励志演说家,而没有明确说他是世界上最年轻的励志演说家,故B项正确。 5.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“How many 11-year-old children do you know that can command the attention of thousands of adults while speaking on serious topics like success, life challenges or responsibility?”可知,Hammad Safi演讲的话题包括成功、生活中的挑战以及责任,这三方面我们都可以从他的演讲中学到,而没有提到童年的快乐回忆,故C项正确。 6.词义猜测题。根据画线词前的“Many in Pakistan are astonished by Hammad’s self-confidence and his ability to lecture on important subjects, but there are also those who believe that this role is”可知,许多巴基斯坦人认为Hammad Safi的自信和演讲能力让人感到惊讶,也有一些人认为演说家这个角色剥夺了一个孩子的童年,画线词词义为“剥夺、强行带走”,故C项正确。 7.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文介绍了巴基斯坦最年轻的励志演说家Hammad Safi的演讲风格,同时也介绍了不同的人对这个成名的小小演说家有不同的看法,故D项正确。 8. D 9. A 10. B 11. C 【解析】 【分析】 本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,当多叶植物受到攻击时,它们不会坐以待毙,会发出VOCs,以此来保护自己或者与周围的植物通过化学物质进行交流。 8.细节理解题。根据“reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm”可知,当植物受到伤害时,会分泌一种特殊的化学物质。故选D。 9.词义推测题。根据“Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch”,一旦它们到达这里,( ),然后这些攻击者就会成为植物的午餐,根据语境,故选A。 10.细节理解题,根据“ In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors ,relatively speaking ,stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do”,可知,植物在必要的时候会通过分泌化学物质,通知周围的植物保持警惕。故选B。 11.推理判断题。根据“imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There’s a whole lot going on”可知,这个世界远比我们我们看到或听到的更热闹、更亲密,我们认知能力有限,有很多事仍在继续发生,远比我们想象的要复杂。故选C。 【点睛】 本文33题属于词义猜测题。我们可以根据后句“Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch”中的lunch,说明攻击者会成为午餐以及“When a leafy plant is under attack,it doesn’t sit quietly植物受到攻击时,不会坐以待毙”,故the tables are turned意为“The plants get ready to fight back.植物准备反击”。本题属于典型的理由上下文语境推测。 近几年高考阅读中猜测词义考查方法多样化,其中根据上下文语境推测将会越来越多。根据上下文语境作出判断:有时短文中出现一个需猜测其意义的词或短语,下面接着出现其定义域解释或例子,这就是判断该词或短语意义的主要依据。 12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B 【解析】 【分析】 这是一篇说明文。科学家的一项研究发现:气候变暖使得柔枝松渐抢占了狐尾松的生长地。 12.推理判断题。由第一段内容可知,狐尾松是在地球上生活最长久的植物,它具有奇怪的外形,被风吹歪的树干,它可以活5000年。但是专家担心一些地区的气候变暖可能会威胁它的未来。由此可知,第一段的作用是引出话题。故A选项正确。 13.词义猜测题。由划线句子前面的the limber pine,to take over good growing places from the ancient bristlecone可知,柔枝松渐抢占了狐尾松的生长地。因此,划线句子的意思就很明确了,狐尾松正在被挤出它们生长的山区,将会有更少的狐尾松在这里生长。故D选项正确。 14.细节理解题。由第五段This race between such slow-growing trees takes thousands of years. They say climate change is causing the competition和倒数第一段中的The researchers say the findings show how climate change can affect the two kinds of trees可知,天气变化影响树木,导致了树木之间的竞争,竞争过程对于生长缓慢的树木来说会持续几千年。故C选项正确。 15.观点态度题。由整个短文可知,气候变暖使得柔枝松渐抢占了狐尾松的生长地。狐尾松生活在更高海拔的地区。Smithers认为狐尾松没有处于灭绝的境地,但几千年以后有可能被挤出生存地区。这些发现能够表明气候变暖对树木的影响,可以帮助科学家明白更加复杂的森林。故B选项正确。 16. F 17. G 18. A 19. C 20. Forest Schools originated in Sweden in the 1950s and spread to other countries, particularly Denmark where they have become an important part of the Danish early years program. In a typical Danish Forest School, young children from 3 years are taken into the forest for 4 hours each day of the week. They take no toys with them, but instead use only what the forest provides (and their imaginations) to develop their games. There is a primitive hut in the forest, which is used in extreme weather. Activities are child-led and fun, such as finding small animals or stomping in puddles. Because of high adult to child ratios, children can safely try out activities which are often considered too dangerous, such as climbing trees or lighting fires, and by dressing the children in good protective clothing, they are able to play freely. By setting children small manageable tasks at which they are unlikely to fail, and giving genuine praise, children’s independence and confidence grow. A Swedish scientific study found that children in the Forest School are more balanced and socially capable, have fewer sick days, are more able to concentrate and have better co-ordination than the city nursery children. The primary reason appeared to be the greater opportunities to play in nature, so that children play for longer at a time, tending not to disturb each other as much as children in the city nursery. The study observed that where children were interrupted, they became irritable, their stress level rose, and their ability to concentrate fell. The study also showed that the Forest School children had 25 % fewer sick days than the city children. One reason for this is that the air is nearly always better outside than indoors. Outside a child is not so exposed to virus and bacteria and not so likely to be infected by other children. Another reason may be that, since stress has been shown to have a negative effect on the immune system, high stress levels may be weakening the city children. The Forest School children, on the other hand, are in a pleasant, natural, fun and less stressful environment. 4.Why is there a primitive hut in the forest? A.To let children have fun. B.To store daily necessities. C.To enrich the children’s imagination. D.To protect the children from bad weather. 5.What kind of activities do the Forest School children have? A.Activities to improve grades. B.Activities designed for adults. C.Activities usually played by braver kids. D.Fun activities but with a certain level of danger. 6.The Forest School children are more able to concentrate because ______. A.they have more interesting things to do B.they are accompanied by adults C.they are not disturbed so often D.they are playing in small groups 7.Which of the following best describes the Forest School children? A.Free and wild. B.Confident and happy. C.Polite and calm. D.Strong and adventurous. Environmentalists said our planet was bound to die. Now one man says they are wrong. “Everyone knows the planet is in bad shape,” thundered a magazine article last year. “Species are being driven to die out at record rates, and the rivers are so poisonous that fish are floating on the surface, dead.” But there’s growing belief that what everyone takes for granted is wrong: Things are actually getting better. A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world’s environment. Rivers, seas, rain and the atmosphere are all getting better. The total amount of forests in the world is not declining. The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg, professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, is an attack on the misleading claims of environmental groups, and the “bad news” culture that makes people believe everything is getting worse. Now the attacks are increasingly coming from left-wing environmentalists such as Lomborg, a former member of Greenpeace. The accusation is that, although the environment is improving, green groups — with profits of hundreds of millions of pounds a year — are using scare tactics (战术) to gain donations. Lomborg’s book doesn’t deny global warming — probably the biggest environmental threat — but destroys almost every other environmental claim with many official statistics. The Worldwatch Institute claims that deforestation(采伐森林) has been speeding over the last 30 years. Buy Lomborg says that is simply rubbish. Since the dawn of agriculture the world has lost about 20% of its forest cover, but in recent decades the forest area’s depleting has come to a stop. According to UN figures, the area of forests has remained almost steady, at about 30% of total land area, since 1940s. Forests in countries such as the US, UK and Canada have actually been expanding over the past 40 years. Despite all the warnings the Amazon rainforest has only shrunk by about 15%. Nor are all our species dying out. Some campaigners claim that 50% of all species will have died out within 50 years. But other studies show only 0.08% of species are dying out each year. Conservation efforts have been successful. Whales are no longer threatened and the bald eagle is off the endangered list. Environmental groups claim that many of the improvements are the results of their campaigns. Stephen Tindale, director of Greenpeace UK, said, “There are important examples, such as acid rain and ozone, where things weren’t as bad as predicted, and that’s because our behavior changed.” 8.What is Lomborg’s main argument in The Skeptical Environmentalist? A.Our planet is in bad shape. B.The world’s environment is improving. C.The total amount of forests is declining. D.Conservation efforts have been successful. 9.What is Lomborg’s main accusation of environmentalists? A.They changed their behavior toward the environment. B.They only told people bad news about the environment. C.They scared people into making donations. D.They overturned our basic assumption about the world’s environment. 10.The underlined word “depleting” is close in meaning to “_______”. A.speeding B.limiting C.expanding D.reducing 11.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Are all species dying out? B.Isn’t conservation powerful? C.Is Our Planet Bound to Die? D.Aren’t environmentalists wrong? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss. One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally fun_ction and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning”, says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer. The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (恶意软件).“We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behaviors.” But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (监视),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.” Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia. Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If people know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says. 12.According to the text, AI monitors employees by ________. A.taking pictures of them B.getting access to their data C.signaling their usual performance D.catching their actions 13.What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’s attitude towards the system? A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Uncaring. D.Negative. 14.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to? A.Security breach. B.Employees’ productivity. C.The right to privacy. D.Workplace surveillance. 15.Phil Legg’s concern about the system suggests that ________. A.it is too risky to be used at work B.it will affect employees’ emotions C.it may not be so effective as expected D.it will encourage employee, productivity 二、七选五 Most people have practiced some form of hobby at a point in their lives, whether it is some form of sports, playing a musical instrument, creating art, cooking or something else. 第I卷(选择题) 一、阅读理解 Four of the World's Best Futurists(未来学家) Kevin Kelly Kevin Kelly is an author. His 1994 publication, Out of Control, discusses a future where machines and systems are so complex as to be indistinguished(难区分的) from living things. His latest book What Technology Wants suggests that technology is not just a mixture of wires and metals but a living thing that has its own need. The book looks out through the eyes of this global technological system to discover what it wants. Dr Michio Kaku Dr Michio Kaku is a professor of theoretical physics at the City of New York and author of The Future of the Mind and Physics of the Future. In The Future of the Mind , he explores the frontier of neuroscience. He predicts that one day we will be able to upload the human brain into a computer. In Physics of the Future, he predicts that glasses and contact lenses will be connected to the Internet and cars will become driverless with the power of the GPS system. David Brin Science fiction author and scientist, David Brin has received awards. In 1998, he won the Freedom of Speech Award for The Transparence Society. The book concerns threats to personal affairs and openness in the information age. In a world where the police monitor public places 24 hours a day with cameras and some credit companies can sell people's financial details to anyone willing to pay, Brin warns that surveillance(监控) technology will be used by too few people in the future. He argues that the tables should be turned and the public should have access to information like who is buying financial details from credit companies. Dr Ray Kurzweil Dr Ray Kurzweil is the main inventor of the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind. He is the director of artificial intelligence development at Google. Over the past 25 years, a number of his predictions have come true. Dear Graham, My partner and I have recently lost a pet quite suddenly. Normal life is continuing with so much sadness for my pet meant so much to me. Lots of people won't understand my feeling this way about the death of an animal. This obviously isn't the first time someone in my life has passed away: when I was younger we lost elderly relatives who I loved very much, and naturally much-loved family pets died occasionally too. But this has hit me so much harder. I put so much love into the relationship and I'm just finding it hard to get my head around the fact that it's gone. Thank you for taking the time to read this. ANON, VIA EMAIL Dear Anon, Something you loved deeply has gone from your life, so of course you are sad. We love our pets differently from family members or friends and part of that is because we know they will probably die before us. Our time with our dogs or cats is precious precisely because we understand it is limited. As humans, we go through most of life understanding we would die one day. But animals don’t. We are the keeper of the secret. Of course, living a life unencumbered(不受妨碍) by thoughts of death means that our pets, in general, lead very simple, happy lives. It’s one of the reasons why they are such a joy to be round. You are, of course, correct when you say that many people don't understand your grief, so don't talk to them. Share your feelings with like-minded souls. I'm sure a simple search online will reveal many practical advice for moving on. And when you are ready, you can welcome another animal into your life and then you will enjoy happiness again. GRAHAM, VIA EMAIL 4.What can we learn about Anon? A.She feels bored with her normal life. B.Her pet's sudden death hits her greatly. C.Her partner won't understand her feeling. D.She can't get along well with her relatives. 5.Graham thinks that our time with pets is precious because ____. A.they have no secrets B.they are very simple C.their life is very short D.they are always happy 6.In Graham's opinion, Anon should ____. A.tell her pet from family members B.avoid telling others her own secrets C.adopt another animal as her new pet D.try her best to understand other's grief 7.Who would Graham probably be? A.One of Anon's family members. B.One of Anon's like-minded friends. C.A pet lover who provides advice online. D.An expert on dealing with relationship. The printing press has a long history. It was invented in Germany by Joannes Gutenberg around 1440, and brought to England by William Caxton in the 1470s.Yet the basic technology of printing remained the same up to the end of the 18th century, requiring two men to operate a wooden screw press by hand, producing about 200 impressions an hour. The 19th century was the period in which this process was mechanised, automated, and made many times faster. A key moment in the development of mass newspapers was the development of the steam-powered printing press, adopted by the times in 1814. The new presses were able to print per hour around five times the number produced by the machines. The editor, John Walter, had the machines fixed secretly at night, so that when his printers reported for duty the next morning the majority of them found that they were out of work. The Times went from a circulation of 5,000 a day in 1815 to around 50,000 in the middle of the century. This was not caused by the steam press, but neither could it have happened without it. Later developments improved this effect: the Applegath machine achieved 5,000 impressions per hour, and the Hoe press, an import from the United States, reached to 20,000 impressions per hour. Increase in the speed of papermaking in this period brought down the cost of printed materials both for the producer and the customer. In 1896, the Daily Mail was sold at the cost of only half a penny, and by 1900 it was selling nearly 1,000,000 copies a day. If print production was completely changed in those years, then so was its distribution. The appearance of the steam railway meant that for the first time newspapers could be distributed across the country on a daily basis. 8.What can we learn about the basic technology of printing? A.It was invented first in the middle of the 15th century. B.It was brought into England by Joannes Gutenberg. C.It took over 400 years to change after invention. D.It took two hours to produce about 200 impressions. 9.How many impressions did the new press produce an hour in 1814? A.About 20,000. B.About 1,000. C.About 2,000. D.About 5,000. 10.Increase in the speed of papermaking led to ____. A.the invention of steam printing press B.the development of the steam railway C.the appearance of the Daily Mail D.the decline of printing expenses 11.The passage is developed mainly by ____. A.providing examples B.making comparisons C.following the order of time D.following the order of space Being a parent is tough. Prejudice against parents in the workplace only makes it harder. Asking for flexible schedule is not unique to working parents only. I've worked with people in their twenties that requested to work a four-day schedule so they could go back to school part time. I've seen older adults in the workplace change their schedules so that they can spend more time at home. Almost everyone has to cut out of the office every now and again for a doctor's appointment or other personal matters. Flexible schedules seem to be synonymous(代名词) with working parents, but in reality, they are not. Parents aren't devoted to their jobs. This is really surprising because it's quite the contrary. There is actually strong evidence that parents are more devoted to their jobs than many other employees. They are some of the most focused employees out there. Parents are less likely to change jobs than other employees. Stability(稳定) is key when raising a family. Parents aren't good team members. Since it is parents that need to leave the office at 5 or aren't able to come in before 9, most people think that the singletons on the team need to make up for it. In today's technology world, this is hardly the case. While many parents do limit their physical "in office" hours, most spend time on weekends, early mornings, and after work working. Besides, parents may be more likely to take vacations during major holidays due to children's school schedules. Parents are at work only out of financial needs. Why would anyone want to leave their children behind and come to the workplace if they didn't have to? Actually, a lot of people do. Caring for children is a wonderful experience, but everyone needs a break. Many parents may still be interested in their field of work, finding work interesting. Money is nice, but it's certainly not the only reason that parents are there. 12.Why do some young people ask for a four-day work schedule? A.To see their working parents. B.To return to school part time. C.To spend more time at home. D.To make an appointment with doctors. 13.What does the author think of parents' attitude towards their work? A.They are flexible with their work. B.They always show interest in their work. C.They believe their work is unique. D.They are rather devoted and focused. 14.The word "singletons" in the fourth paragraph can be most suitably replaced by ____. A.good team members B.parents C.the unmarried D.hard-working people 15.What is the passage mainly about? A.Unreasonable opinions about working parents. B.Pressure that working parents suffer. C.The contributions that parents make. D.The profession parents are interested in. 二、七选五 How to improve reading efficiency 1. Make sure of your purpose of reading. Before you start reading, ask yourself why you are reading this book. Most people read for two main reasons: pleasure or knowledge. Being specific and clear about your reading purpose not only helps you to avoid books that you don’t need to read, it also reminds you the book is important to you.16. 2. Read only what you are attracted to. Whether you are reading fiction or nonfiction, it's important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may recommend books that they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy. 17. 3. Give up books that you don't enjoy. You may have selected books that match your purpose. You may have selected books that you are attracted to. But you are reading them, there may still be some books that you won't enjoy reading. 18. Remember reading shouldn't make feel annoyed. 4. 19. Having a reading goal helps you figure out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. 5. Give yourself a deadline to finish each book. Before you read each book, ask yourself when you need to finish this book. What I find interesting is that I tend to read books that I borrow from libraries faster than the books I bought. 20. I don't need to return those books. When you don't set a deadline to finish you book, there isn't a sense of urgency. And when something isn't urgent, you tend to slow down. A.Set a reading goal. B.Understand each word of the sentence.
